Floating parties … the latest fad?

The vast amount of time spent in the water by anybody who practices swimming as a sports, makes one question, on more than one occassion, what am I doing ‘entredoscorcheras’ (the latter is the name of the blog of my friend R.)? Time spent in the water makes you sensitive to all kinds of sensations experienced in the water.  Sound is definately one of them!

And so, what about a music concert in a pool? Wet Sounds have come up with this innovative idea of touring swimming pools and giving music sessions to a floating audience.  Through this set up, three sound spaces are created: one inside the water, one outside the water and a fusion of both spaces if the listener floats on the surface of the water.

Want to know more about this underwater sound gallery? If yes, check out the article by Paul Hardman from Aesthetica Magazine who has recently attended a session.  Although Hardman feels that Wet Sounds could have been more explorative with sound, he felt that that entire group experience was more friendly than an art gallery or concert situation.  The experience of Carlene Thomas-Bailey from the Guardian is distinct. She is surprised at the sharpness of the music, especially when compared to the distorted music one gets when listening to music in the bath.

In more than one way, I am intrigued.  Let’s hope Wet Sounds will pass by Seville, anytime soon.  And if they are looking for a pool, let’s hope they drop by at Club Natacion Sevilla , the only pool in the historic city centre.  The idea of a floating party will definately lure any member of the Masters swimming team!

La gran cantidad de tiempo pasada en el agua por cualquier persona que practica la natación como deporte, le hace preguntarse en más de una ocasión: ¿qué hago “entredoscorcheras” (el nombre del blog de mi amigo R .)? El tiempo pasado en el agua te hace sensible a todo los tipos de sensaciones que se experimentan en ella. ¡Y el sonido es definitivamente una de ellas!

Y así, ¿qué os parecería un concierto de música en una piscina? Wet Sounds ha tenido la idea innovadora de recorrer las piscinas y dar sesiones de música a un público flotante. En este contexto se crean tres espacios: uno dentro del agua, otro fuera del agua y una fusión de ambos, si el oyente elige estar en la superficie.

¿Queréis saber más sobre esta galería de sonido bajo el agua? Si es así, consultad el artículo de Paul Hardman de Aesthetica Magazine que recientemente asistió a una sesión. Aunque Hardman sea de la opinión de que Wet Sound podría haber sido más experimental con el sonido, le parecía que esa experiencia de grupo era mucho más agradable que estar en una galería de arte o de asistir a un concierto. Por otra parte, la experiencia de Carla Thomas Bailey, del Guardian, es distinta. Ella se sorprendió de la nitidez de la música, especialmente en comparación con la música distorsionada que uno tiene cuando la escucha en el baño.

Siendo sincera, estoy intrigada. Ojalá Wet Sounds se pasara pronto por Sevilla. Y si estuvieran buscando una piscina, esperemos que sea la del Club Natación Sevilla, la única en el centro histórico de la ciudad. Sin duda, la idea de una fiesta flotando sería flipante para cualquier miembro del equipo Máster de natación.

20s * 20s in 37°23’N (aka PechaKucha in Seville)

Coincidences of life: while preparing yet another presentation for a conference, an email pops up from P. announcing an event with a strange name: PechaKucha.

PechaKucha is an event in which a presenter has 20 slides and 20 seconds per image (20s * 20s) to get his/her message across.  The origin of this format is the land of minimalism: Japan.  The idea started as an event in Tokyo in 2003, where young artists met to discuss, network and get inspired.  The underlying message: get to the point.

And so I get to know this morning, PechaKucha will be in Seville (37°23’N ) next Tueday 15th March.  The event will take place at Teatro Alameda at 9pm.  With presentations such as Tapas and Tweets, CityThinking and Networks&Ecology, I have no doubt it will be an inspiring evening.  Always happy to be surprised.

As it happens, today 8/03 is also woman’s day.  Most of the newspapers have compiled their own list of important women.  So why not compile my own list of inspiring women in pechakucha style…and so… here’s my selection in 20 images:
